Stars and Stripes…

Fireworks brighten the mid summer’s night
Honoring America on the fourth of July
In the hearts of her people, loyalty and pride
For the red, white and blue, the stars and the stripes.

     Red, white and blue…
     Stars and stripes…

On a background as blue as the sky, this bookmark fits perfectly in any man or woman’s book, a permanent reminder of the patriotism of those who fight in far away lands…

     Stitching time: aprox. 15hrs.

One of my favorite bookmarks – not only as a Fourth of July item – and one selected by quite a few people as a gift one for a loved one in the service…

We can’t all sparkle…

I do love interactive cards! I love receiving them, as I know they will always put a big smile on my face as I discover all the “tricks” they can do… As I grew up, there were not too many cards like that in Romania, and yet my dad used to get his hands on one, once in a while… That magical memory pops up its head every time I open a Hallmark card that “does” things… LOL

However, as much I love those cards I am a complete failure at creating them. No tutorial can help my mostly logical brain visualize how a “waterfal” card should work or one that has characters rolling from one end of the card to the other… So far, in my two years since I have started to create paper cards, the best I could do was the “mountain & valley” kind of cards, the type that a message is adhered in such a way that one can read it when the card is fully open, more or less…

So here is “Sparkle“… I really loved the message it offers: “We can’t all be stars, but we can sparkle…” (front cover),

“All I need is one star in the sky, to wish for you everyday!” (inside of card)

The card was created with yellow and navy cardstock, hand stamped with solid and outline stars. I cannot remember the provenience of the diecuts, most likely from a kit… I guess it turned out OK 😉

We don’t get what we need…

We don’t get what we want or need. We get what we prepare for, ask for, negotiate, demand, deserve and earn.

And even still, we must fight to protect what is ours to keep the undeserving from taking it …and yet be open enough to give a portion to those in need.

In my Heart…

One category of cards I don’t really have enough of is male geared cards… A few days ago, sifting and re-organizing my “Listed Cards” box, I’ve seen lots of flowers and lace, pearls and lots of frou-frou, but besides a couple of “Father’s Day” cards not many masculine cards… Now, we all have a husband, boyfriend, father brother – or just a male friend that has an upcoming birthday… Or maybe we just want to say Thank You to the guy next door that helped us change the flat tire last weekend… Well, you get the idea…

So, I’ve decided to work and list some “manly” cards in my shop in the next couple of weeks. I’ve started working on them last weekend, but I was less than a week after my carpal tunnel and lateral epicondylitis in my left wrist and elbow and I was not as productive as I expected myself to be.

However, I did finish and list one of the cards, “In my Heart“. The card was hand stamped on kraft cardstock and layered on dark chocolate-brown. One of my favorite Stampin’ Up DSP, Mocha Morning, has been used to accent the kraft cardstock base, as well as the card band. A perfect card for the man in your life, to let him know he is in your mind always… The card is a standard A2 (4 1/4 in by 5 1/2 in) and it comes with a cream envelope. The cream insert was left blank, ready for your added thoughts and sentiments…

Supplies are all Stampin’ Up, unless otherwise noted: Cardstock Crumb Cake #120953, Early Expresso #119686; DSP Mocha Morning #122366; Ink Early Expresso #119670; Stamps Word Play #120651; Punch Ticket Corner #119867; Envelope Very Vanilla #107300; Accessories copper brads, snail adhesive.

Yin & Yang Bookmark

Yin is soft while Yang is hard.
Yin is stillness while Yang is movement.
The moon is Yin while the sun is Yang.
Woman is Yin while Man is Yang.
Mountain is Yin while the river is Yang.
Intuitive is Yin while Logical is Yang.
Winter is Yin while Summer is Yang and so on.

The ancient Chinese subscribe to a concept called Yin Yang which is a belief that there exist two complementary forces in the universe. One is Yang which represents everything positive or masculine and the other is Yin which is characterized as negative or feminine. One is not better than the other. Instead they are both necessary and a balance of both is highly desirable.

This thinking is different from the duality of most religion where one state overcomes the other e.g. good over evil. In the concept of Yin Yang, too much of either one is bad. The ideal is a balance of both. The hot Saharan desert for example is an example of extreme Yang while the bitter cold Antarctica is extreme Yin. Neither is desirable.

     Stitching time: approx. 10hrs

The backing of the bookmark is white sticker paper and it allows you to write a dedication or a few meaningful words. The size is an approximate 2.75in by 6.5in. The bookmark comes in a handmade, slimline white envelope, with a Velcro or ribbon closure. This bookmark was created in a smoke and pet free environment.

Beach Read – Cross-stitched bookmark

One of my mental New Year “resolutions” was to better keep up with my blog, as well as my shops. So, at times, I might post more of the newer things I am creating and posting or simply updates on my boring life’s going ons… Maybe not daily posts, but as often as I possibly can… Of course, history taught me that New Year resolutions seem to be made only for us to break them as soon as their newness loses some of its luster – or maybe not…

Right now, waiting for my coffee to be ready, I thought I should post another one of my older bookmarks, “Beach Read“. I love the unique surfboard shape and the summer details added by the flower, cool sunglasses, suntan lotion and the tiny flip flops… lol… The colors seem as perfect as the most perfect summerday at the beach… Sigh… I love the ocean: the water lapping on the beach, the smell of salty water, walking on the warm, wet sand, the sounds of the seagulls scavanging for food – I love it all, yet I have not been close to any beach in close to 10 years…

Enjoy the bookmark and feel free to let me know what you think 🙂

New Year Thoughts

We are just a few hours away from welcoming a New Year here in East Tennessee… I have considered making a few New Year’s resolutions, but the very thought of committing them to paper made them seem so… definitive… I guess that is the very idea of a New Year’s resolution, yet I will commit to memory only the never-ending list of things I would love to improve or change.

The year has been better than the last; I have been more creative and productive where my two Etsy shops are concerned – though I cannot say that my sales have increased a whole lot. I could have promoted my shops better, or at least renew my cards more often (on thing that keeps popping up on my mental list of things that need to be improved…) Creating, taking photos, renewing & listing new items was not an issue on the weeks I was off work (six weeks due to a temporary layoff at the plant and another six weeks due to major surgery…) As soon as I returned to work, we had to work quite a lot of overtime, as Honda was trying to make up for the lost production due to this Spring’s Japan earthquake… After working 25 days with only one day off, let me tell you that the last thing I wanted to do was to sit in front of the computer… However, I am planning to work on this issue (I have quite a bit of photos taken, edited and cropped and ready to be listed – in either of the shops) Plus, I have dozens of ideas for new cards, which will come in handy as soon as I am somewhat recovered from this second surgery I am scheduled for (carpal tunnel and repair of a partially torn elbow ligament – thankfully, both on the same arm…) It will be a painful January, and hopefully I will not have to be away from work for more than 8 or 10 weeks…

Well, I might not have any resolutions for the New Year, but I do have quite a bit on my “To Do” list, and it is mainly about re-organizing my office/craft room. I have amassed quite a large quantity of patterned paper and paper pads (I cannot resist any of My Mind’s Eye papers – they are just too beautiful…), so I need to start using it more in my card creations. My stamps, individuals and sets, wood mounted, clear or clings, they all need to be catalogued, sorted and prioritized for using… I happen to still know where everything is without searching for it for more than a minute or two, my every so often my brain seems to be taken a brief vacation – and then I am just a tad lost. I do not like that feeling!

So, how about you, made any New Year’s resolutions yet…? Any ideas that you care to share with the ones (like me…) that are challenged…? I would care to hear what you are up to this New Year, so how about leaving me a brief comment and tell me all about it…?

To everyone else, have a safe Happy New Year!
